On Saturday, March 27, twelve Jacksonville area residents representing Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville (HabiJax) travelled to Tucurrique, Cartago, Costa Rica to work with Habitat para la Humanidad Costa Rica. We worked to build a house for a family with three children. Here is an account of our time in Costa Rica and some pictures of our experiences.

Day One - From Jacksonville to Tuqurrique

We arrived safely to the most beautiful surroundings.  Long but adventuresome day!  The aroma of supper fills the air.

Our hotel is nestled in the mountains with beautiful views that match those we saw during the several hour drive from San Jose.  The roads are steep and winding with no guard rails - but our driver Jose, doesn't miss a beat.

We stopped at a mall - everything American - to get a bite to eat.  Later, we stopped at a roadside veggie stand to get some things to bring to the hotel.  Tanya, our Spanish speaking traveling companion, had a wonderful conversation with the woman at the stand.  She wanted to know how her son could get a Habitat home.  I'll have one of the teenagers describe the scene in a bit.

Tomorrow we head for Cartago and the basilica for the Palm Sunday liturgy - should be quite an experience.  Then we are off to sightsee - a couple of volcanos (one live) and some ruins (not sure what that's about yet).

Everyone is thrilled to be here and looking forward to a great week.  We can't wait to being work on the house and to meeting the family who soon will own it - very exciting!
